HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The 250th Presidential Airlift Wing is one of the premier flying units of the Philippine Air Force mandated to provide air transportation to the President of the Republic, the First Family, visiting Heads of State, and other personalities who are considered to be “very very important persons”. Its humble beginning can be traced on 24 October 1947 when the Philippine Air Force was tasked to provide air transportation for the President of the Republic, his family and state guests. Initially, the then 205th Composite Wing was tasked to provide aircrew and C-47 aircraft. Eventually, on 02 September 1968, the 7001st Detachment was created to support Presidential movements. The detachment has an initial equipment of one F-27, one C-47, and one S-62 helicopter. Three UH-1H helicopters were later added in its inventory on 1969. On 13 April 1972, the unit was renamed 7001st Presidential Airlift Squadron with an addition of one BAC 1-11 owned by the Central Bank of the Philippines assigned to it. With increasing personnel and air assets, the unit was upgraded to 700th Special Mission Wing on 02 December 1974. Since then, additional aircraft were added in its inventory to replace the older ones such as the YS-11, B-212 and Puma helicopters, the Fokker F-28, Sikorsky S-70 “Blackhawk” and S-76 helicopters. The Wing was designated as the 250th Presidential Airlift Wing on 16 July 1986 by virtue of GO # 569 General Headquarters Armed Forces of the Philippines and subsequently GO # 211 Headquarters Philippine Air Force. Six Bell B-412s started to arrive by batches from 1994 to 1996 to modernize its helicopter fleet. On 01 July 1998, the unit was designated as 250th Special Airlift Wing. However, this designation did not last long as it was later renamed 250th Presidential Airlift Wing on 15 September 1998.
